In 2015, Berens represented an Army Ranger with extensive combat experience.  The soldier had been in pretrial confinement in the military brig (Northwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility) on Joint Base Lewis-McChord for approximately one year without trial.  Berens was retained and within weeks the case was dismissed by the presiding military judge during pre-trial motions at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  Berens’ efforts in the case were central to this combat veteran being immediately released from pretrial confinement and separating from the service with benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs and an Honorable characterization of service.
